This is the eighth year in a row I've run this series in April.
Tye Trujillo already knows a bit about the rockstar lifestyle — his dad is Metallica bassist Robert Trujillo — but he's about to find out more: The 12-year-old is filling in as bassist for Korn's Reginald "Fieldy" Arvizu, who won't be available for the South American leg of the band's tour.
Trujillo is a member of California band The Helmets, and he'll be playing with Korn until May 6.
I mean, come on! This is a no-brainer. Maybe even spin it off as a TV series. Here's my take.
Frankie "Flexx" Flynn is the drummer and founder of the cult heavy metal band Cave Bacon. His temper as fiery as his playing, he has recently chased off another bass player, the third one in less than two years. Frankie is one hard-partying and crazed rock and roller, but when it comes to music — especially the rhythm provided by drums and bass — he knows in his gut what he wants. And this last set of players? Just didn't cut it.
That's his line. In actuality, his blow-ups and verbal abuse drove the players away. It has left the band in a precarious place just as they are starting to break into the next level based off positive response to their latest LP.
Enter Daisy. She was a groupie turned Frankie's squeeze— for a few weeks — when the band was in its formative stage. Frankie is shocked to see her. It's been over a decade. An awkward hello. Then Daisy produces someone from behind her back.
"Frankie, meet Duncan. Your son."
This. Is. News. To. Frankie. But Daisy has DNA proof — years back, she saved some of his sperm (don't ask) for a test. And yep, it's true: Frankie is the father of this quiet, clean cut 13 year-old boy.
Frankie is all like, "Okay, guess you want some child support and shit?"
Daisy replies: "I don't want your money. I want your parenting. Take on Duncan as Cave Bacon's new bass player."
Daisy's thinking: Frankie needs a bass player. And he needs to get to know his son.
Turns out Duncan is quite the musician. And guess what? The band's manager LOVES the idea. Imagine the press!
Or let's gender bend it: Duncan is actually a girl. Now Frankie has to learn how to be a father of an adolescent daughter. While on tour. With all that goes on when a musician is on the road.
It's Almost Famous meets Scott Pilgrim.
There you go: My seventeenth story idea for the month. And it's yours. Free!
What would you do with it?
Each day this month, I invite you to click on RESPONSES and join me to do some further brainstorming. Take each day's story idea and see what it can become when you play around with it. These are all valuable skills for a writer to develop.
See you in comments. And come back tomorrow for another Story Idea Each Day For A Month.
